I think making decisions like that is highly depends on the Product and Company state.

Airbnb in a conceptual view has les product changes (since it is very mature) than marketing (which needs these days because of the global economic crisis). So, as a CEO, you should think which approach can work for you. Regardless of what is standard or predefined in a Tech company. I believe there is PM role inside the PMM people but is paler than before. There is a message in this decision to the all company: The root cause of developing a new feature must be in marketing. In other words, this is time for finding customers.
